Farrell Dominates In Darwin

WA’s Flyin’ Ryan Farrell continues his dominance of Darwin’s Ostojic Group Northline Speedway with a convincing win on Night 1 of Round 2 of the Chariots of Thunder Sprintcar Series on Friday 28 August 2009.

Starting from pole position in the 20 lap feature race, Farrell was jumped by New South Welshman Adrian Maher who started alongside him. Fate was to turn Farrell’s way considering his bad luck on night 2 of Round 1. Luch Monte and Chace Karpenko brought out the first yellows with a tangle and spin in turn 2 of lap 2. Both were able to restart however Maher pulled infield with noticeable problems with his front left wheel, relinquishing the lead to Farrell who was never troubled to greet the chequered flag ahead of Jamie Maiolo from WA and the Northern Territory’s Allan Barlee.

The night started brilliantly for Farrell by setting a new lap record in time trials stopping the clocks with a scorcher of 11.511 seconds. Heat 1 commenced in sensational circumstances when the NT’s Jason McIver slammed the wall in turn 2 only moments after being push started for the start with an apparent rear end failure which speared him into the wall. Wayne Bridgeford from the NT created further carnage with a huge dump after tangling with WA’s Mark Hales.

Heat 2 and more controversy with Paul “the Dude” Morris and Peter Lynch (NT) creating a false start with a way too rapid pace up front. Upon the restart, series leader Ian Loudoun from NSW ended his race with a spin and a few words to infield officials regarding the start of the race. Adrian Maher claimed victory in the race ahead of Shaun Dobson from Tasmania and Chace Karpenko.

Allan Barlee won heat 3 ahead of Ben Atkinson in a non eventful race. Jamie Maiolo claimed Heat 4 from Ryan Farrell and Luch Monte. Chaos resumed in Heat 5 with Peter Lynch and Paul Morris coming together in Turn 3 ending with Lynch upside down and Morris falling over onto his side. NT driver Michael Reid, driving the #22 WA registered sprintcar brought out the reds in Heat 6 with a huge end over ender on the main straight which saw some repairs to the pit gate carried out.

Action continues tomorrow night for Night 2 with another 6 heats, B Main and a 30 lap A Main which also counts towards the Darwin Sprintcar Titles.
