Not The Night He Wanted.
Ryan Farrell stood next to his transporter after Saturday nights Silver Cup at the Perth Motorplex with quite a dejected look on his face having just recorded a DNF for the 25 lap journey.
He had wanted to continue with the strong run he had experienced over the previous weeks but Saturday night proved to be one that won’t go down as one of his best efforts. He was fairly philosophical about it, but talking to Ryan you could hear the disappointment in his voice.
“Disappointing night. I really wanted to finish off (the season) strong in my own car, my own team, but tonight the track was something we haven’t experienced before here, but it was the same for all of us and we struggled here tonight. The track conditions really caught us out tonight and it took us all night to work it out.” he said.
He felt more confident leading in to the A-Main after his poor run in the heats (a seventh and a fourth) after the crew had work hard to deliver him a better car to start the final with. He ‘gave it some gas’ prior to lining up for the start and the car felt nice under his right foot, but it all came undone in the first corner when he became caught up with another competitor who slid in to his path.
“We really had something to make a run at the podium. I made a run at going around the top at the start of the race and had nowhere to go. I was lucky to get out of the other side of that one” he said with a wry smile on his face “I kind of pushed and shoved and got through and thought that we would be okay.”
Little did he know that the contact had given him a slowly deflating left front tyre that eventually ended his night early. He started to feel it at the next yellow light stoppage but decided to give it a go.
“I thought we would be okay. I knew they (officials) couldn’t pull me off for a left front tyre so I kept going. I probably done about ten laps and it was getting ugly, and to put a car at risk for tenth place was just stupid so I parked it on the infield. A disappointing result as I really believe we could have done something in the feature race but that’s racing.”
The cars in one piece, and the drivers raring to go, and you can be assured that ‘Flyan” Ryan’ will be back to fight another day.
