Farrell Flyn’ On Opening Night.
It was opening night of the tenth season for the Perth Motorplex and Ryan Farrell only wanted one thing, a win.
And he achieved it in style, having to fight off one of Australia’s best in Kerry Madsen to claim the twenty five lap Grand Opening Showdown. “I can’t complain as it’s the first night out with a new car. Very happy with the result considering I didn’t start out the night too well and I wasn’t happy with the car to begin with.”
Most people would have been happy with fourth fastest time (14.328), but not Farrell. This shows the determination that Ryan has, and if he doesn’t achieve those desired results he will let you know as he always wears his heart on his sleeve when it comes to
During the heats the Monte Motorsports team worked hard on giving Ryan what he wanted to improve the handling of the #95 Miracle Recreation Equipment J&J, and after two torrid heats he came away with a third and then a last lap win in his second heat to earn enough points to be second on and start on the outside of the front row for the all important 25 lap final.
He grabbed the lead from the green flag and was the class of the field until the closing laps as Madsen reeled him in and passed Farrell in traffic. But he didn’t panic and at the next opportunity regained the lead and drove away from Madsen to take a memorable win.
“Once I had my confidence back we were good” he said after the A-Main “When you lead like that you’re a bit of a sitting duck there sometimes. I knew I was good in turns one and two on the bottom, but three and four I didn’t know where I was supposed to be. It wasn’t until Kerry got me there that the bottom was the place to be so I moved down, covered my tail and I didn’t see him again.”
“The wind tonight was coming from a different direction than normal, it normally comes in over the ocean which from my experience means you can run the car a lot harder and higher down the far end (one and two) because you have the wind to hold the car down. It’s these things you learn over the years and the wind plays a part in how the cars run around here that’s for sure.”
He understands that things are about to get busy for him with his Sprintcar racing for the season and is under no illusions about what’s in front of him. “I got a big season in front of me and I’m realistic about how difficult and how hard it’s going to be.
We’re racing against the best three or four teams in the country, all of whom have been doing World Series for a number of years now and this is only my first year at it. I’m fortunate that Buzzy has done it before which is going to help us a bit, but the top three in WSS is what I’m aiming for, aiming for top five’s every night and win some shows on the way through.”
“I’ve raced my whole career to have this opportunity that Monte Motorsports have given me and I will grab it with both hands and shake the shit out of it.”
