Buzzy Pumped About What Is To Come.
Speaking to Monte Motorsport Crew Chief Kim ‘Buzzy’ Buswell you can tell just by the tone in his voice that he can’t wait for next summers World Series Sprintcars campaign to start.
After two meetings at the Northline Speedway in Darwin, team driver Ryan Farrell has been the one to watch, and Buzzy is more than happy about how the team is working together in the early stages of their winter racing series of events in the Northern Territory capital.
“He was fast let me tell you” he said after arriving back in Perth early this week. “And he is doing what I’m asking of him. We have put a brand new car together to run up there and it’s all been about trying different things so Ryan, myself and Dylan can gel as a team.”
“I’m finding Ryan likes the car a lot freer than the likes Luch (Monte) and Kerry (Madsen), and so running up here is an ideal situation to work on that. In one of the heats on Saturday he started from the front row, so we put a different set up in to experiment with. He wasn’t over thrilled with it, but it gave me the feedback I needed to learn what Ryan prefers in setting up a car to the way he can drive it for the track conditions he is racing on.”
“It’s also good for Ryan because I’m opening up his eyes a bit too. He has listened to what I am trying to do and hasn’t been scared to take the things I’ve suggested on board and try them, so it’s a good thing for both of us.”
Farrell’s results were only just short of the perfect night, producing the quickest time trial, taking two wins and a second placing in the heats and taking out a fine win in the twenty lap final.
This is what the team needs to do to build more confidence in each other as the up-coming summer will be a hectic one.
“It’s going to be an exciting time with us doing the entire WSS schedule, plus all the other blue ribbon events. All up there is over 50 nights of racing that we will be doing as a team, but we are aware of the challenge that is ahead of us.” Said Buswell. “There are a lot of expectations being placed on us, more from external pressures than internal, but we are under no illusions of what we have to do out there on the road.”
And speaking of being on the road, they will be out there for a long time after they leave their West Australian base in November. Buzzy and Dylan are planning to head away after the opening show at the Perth Motorplex, racing in Adelaide in the first week of November, followed by Parramatta and then the WSS round at Brisbane. They stay on the road until a couple of days break over Christmas and then its back on the road for the rest of the summer until returning to Perth for the WSS finals in February.
The winter campaign in the Northern Territory is only 6 to 10 nights, but it is the start of a big learning program that the team will be trying to achieve over the next three years. “I’m realistic about what we can do as a tem, and I believe we have a top five combination out there every week, and think we can pinch some wins along the way” Buswell believes. “When you consider the likes of the East Coast Pipeline and Krikke Motorsport teams have had their driver/crew chief combinations in place for 3 years or more, it shows that Ryan and I are behind the eight ball, but we will be having a red hot crack at it every time we race.”
