Flyan Ryan Comes Away Happy From WWSS.
He didn’t get the win he wanted, but Western Australian champion Ryan Farrell was happy with the results from last weekends Wanless World Series Sprintcar rounds.
After talk of a debut of their newer car affectionately known as K4, it was decided as a team to stick with the car that they had been running all year, K3. Ryan explains “The original plan was to run the new car, it’s here tonight but, this car has only done three shows and is still in good nick, so why change. We will probably debut the new car in January. The two cars are slightly different, so rather than change to something different now we thought we would keep running the same car.”
And it proved to be a successful move. Time trials on night one saw Ryan take out fourth place, while in his heats he garnered a fifth and a seventh to earn enough points in qualifying for pole in his dash. Unfortunately he put himself under some pressure for the A-Main by finishing third to give him a sixth place starting position for the all important final.
But this didn’t stop this west coast throttle stomper, as he and Brooke Tatnell moved forward and as the race progressed he put on a show. Farrell had the speed to take it to the multiple WWSS champ, but once again in his quest for a win in Western Australia he was a bridesmaid. “That’s how it goes” he said with a smile on his face “We had a good night. We struggled early on for car speed but we made some changes as the night went on. We were as fast anybody in the main race. I got by Brooke at one stage but wasn’t good enough to hold him out, we had a good race, but got beat.”
He went into night two confident with the car speed that he and the entire Russell Hall’s Bunbury Auto Group/Cowra Contractors #95 Maxim team had found with the car, only to see it all come undone when the front wing collapsed on the opening lap of time trials and ending with a disappointing result. “It penalized me a lot in the time trial and we got twenty fourth quick, which in this format is pretty much load up and go home.” He said afterwards.
But he knew he needed good results from both his heats, and he did with a second place in his opening heat and a brilliant win in his second. After all this, Ryan only just missed a direct transfer in to the A-Main, with a third place start in the B-Main. He showed what to look forward to in the A-Main with a brilliant win to give him thirteenth starting spot for the finale.
And as the green flag dropped, Farrell put on a show for his loyal west coast fans. He only took seven laps to gain six spots, and started what would be a tough, grinding battle with Max Dumesny, swapping places on a number of occasions, before taking away fifth from the former Australian Champion. As the final wound down he closed on Robbie Farr but ran out of laps to get that extra place, but just as he had done the night before he was the first AHG Series driver home and gained maximum points from the weekend, plus a handy 34 point buffer over second place in the AHG series.
Ryan’s thoughts after night two were “In the B-Main the car felt strong, then we made into the A. I just started to far back. We had really good car speed at the end but I felt I could have done something had we have been a bit further forward, or some more yellows would have helped, but you cant be 24th quick and get back to finish 5th with out doing something right. I passed Max and was about to get Farry so I’m as happy as I can be.”
He concluded by saying “I really gotta thank all the guys in the crew and all the guys that are involved in the team. Russell Hall form the Bunbury Auto Group, Steve Duggan from Cowra Transport who puts in all the hard ours behind the scenes and Brand Passmore from Passmore Automotives who does all the maintenance during the week. We’ve got a really good package this year. A special thanks to Geoff Murphy who was my crew chief last night and tonight. He and I always work well together. My main goal is to win the Australian Title and most of the guys I have to beat to win were here this weekend and I feel really good.”
So where to from here? “The boys are getting all excited and talking about going to Adelaide next week to do World Series over there but my car owner in Victoria Matt Eastham wants me to race Warnambool next week. So I’m not really sure where we will end up. We have five weeks till we race here again (Boxing night at Bunbury) so I will try and do as many shows on the east coast as I can.”
He walks away from the two nights at the Perth Motorplex with his head held high, and deservingly so after competing with some of Australia’s best. But it doesn’t matter where ‘Flyan’ Ryan shows up, he will be there to try for the all important win and put on a show for the fans whenever he races.
