FARRELL WINS PRELIMINARY A
RYAN Farrell made some amends for not winning the 47th Australian Sprintcar Championship a fortnight earlier after winning the 25-lap Preliminary A Main at the Perth Motorplex on Friday night.
Farrell won the opening night of the 27th Annual Michael Nanovich Sprintcar King of Wings from South Australian Steven Lines and American Tim Shaffer.
Farrell got the jump over Lines and Wells while Brazier raced from sixth to fourth.
Brazier went high around Wells for third and seconds later Warrenne Ekins was out of the race after hitting the exit gate while American Chad Blonde was out after cutting a right rear tyre while taking evasive action.
There were some big names back in the pack looking to move forward including Farr, Shaffer and Sartori when American Wade Nygaard slammed into pits bend after seven completed laps.
The driver of the Hall Motorsport USA3 cited a sticking throttle as the cause for the crash.
On the start Farrell led away Lines, Brazier, Wells, Jamie Maiolo, Monte, Bradford, Ben Ellement, Dumesny, Gharst, Reidy, Dowling, Maher, Farr, Shaffer, Maher, Sartori, Mann, Gessner, Dover and Priolo.
Monte was in a dog fight with Bradford while Wells was in a similar battle with Maiolo.
Monte eventually won the battle and then put a move on Maiolo as well.
With 10 laps to go Farrell, Lines and Brazier were all together, muscling through the backmarkers.
Brazier put a big slide job on Lines for third but Lines was equal to the task and the two traded lines for a couple of laps, all while racing in traffic.
Unfortunately for Brazier it counted for nothing after a right rear tyre let go with six lap to go, forcing the field to bunch up.
At the same time Ben Ellement pulled infield with a fire at the rear of the car.
Two laps later there was another restart after David Priolo’s left rear tyre exploded.
Monte went low and claimed third on the restart and then tried a desperate move on Lines for second a few seconds later, but washed off too much speed and slipped back a few spots.
But there was no denying Farrell who won the event from Lines American Tim Shaffer.
It is interesting to note that the first two drivers started from the first two rows while Shaffer started from 22nd
Farrell said it was trying conditions on a warm day in Perth.
“It was hard work just to get around there, very tricky conditions, but it was the same for all of us.
“I just put the hammer down and did the best we could.”
Lines said he had a bit of luck go his way and was happy with his second.
The quick time expert wasn’t surprised he was bumped off in qualifying by local driver Ken Sartori, saying in qualifying he just tried to get a smooth lap in.
