Sometimes second will do
When Ryan Farrell hits any one of the dirt race tracks around Australia, all he usually wants to do is win.
But this year things have changed and Farrell isn’t too worried about the two second places he has taken in feature events here in Western Australia at the Perth Motorplex. It’s all part of the big plan.
“At the end of the day I personally feel like that for the last two or three seasons we have been the fastest local car here, but when the big shows roll around, and the big boys are in town, we just lacked that little bit of extra car speed. (As a team) we have been doing the same ole, same ole here for the last couple of seasons so we decided that at these first couple of club shows were experimental shows and try different things than we have been doing for the last couple of seasons.” He said after Saturday night at the Perth Motorplex.
They found some speed early in the night with the changes in the W95 Bunbury Autogroup/Cowara Contractors/ Maxwill/Maxim but “As the track went off like that in the A-Main we would have been better off going back towards what we had run in the past. In saying that we all agreed that if it costs us a few results to find that extra car speed for the big shows then so be it.”
But of course a win would have been better. As a driver and as a team the W95 Bunbury Autogroup/Cowara Contractors/ Maxwill/Maxim they were not disappointed running second to Luche Monte. Different rear end gears, shocks and stagger combinations were tried, and as result many things were learned.
And that’s not the only change for this season, what about the new silver bullet paint scheme. “I think everyone likes it. All the comments have been positive and I really like it. Russell (Hall) loves it and everyone involved with the team says it looks ‘Mickey Mouse’ and I reckon it’s the best looking car I’ve had.”
So where to now? Well it’s time to return to Collie Speedway for round one of the Hydraulink Southern Thunder Sprintcar Series, a special place to Ryan. “It’s the place I won my first feature race back in either the second or third year I raced with (Geoff) Kendrick. It was a good show and I think I beat Mark Wells for the win. It’s also where my dad John was born and raised so I’m looking forward to it.”
He is also impressed with the idea of the whole Southern Thunder Series that the Krikke promotional team are behind at the south west tracks in Western Australia. “Back when I first got involved with the sport, the country rounds are where you have all your fun. I think today it’s a whole lot more fun than what it is to race at the Perth track. The country tracks make you feel a lot more welcome, I race all over the countryside and the fans appreciate it a lot more when you come to their home towns.”
And it’s just not about Ryan either. “It’s good for the sport. As a whole the sport is going and it would be good if we can get back to twenty six or seven shows a year, get a country series going again. I personally think the stronger the other tracks are the more it keeps the big tracks like Kwinana and that a bit more honest. Years gone by we haven’t had anywhere else to go, and of course Bunbury had all that turmoil, so the stronger the country tracks get the better off we are all gonna be.”
On and off the track no one doubts that Farrell is becoming more mature with every year he spends in the sport. You can be sure that he will prove to be one of the ones to watch this Saturday night at the Smokefree W.A. Collie Speedway for round one of the Southern Thunder Series.
